Welcome

From Counseling Psychology Specialists

Hello and welcome from the American Academy of Counseling Psychology and American Board of Counseling Psychology.

Whether you are a graduate student, early, mid, or late career psychologist, interested in becoming board certified, or already board certified, our joint mission is to encourage Specialty Board Certification and to promote the specialty of Counseling Psychology. We hope that Board Certification and Academy membership will increasingly be of benefit and value to you.

A frequent question asked is: “What is the difference between the American Board of Counseling Psychology (ABCoP) and the American Academy of Counseling Psychology (AACoP)?”  A brief explanation of the two boards is provided below:

The Academy and The Board

The American Academy of Counseling Psychology

The American Academy of Counseling Psychology (AACoP) advances Counseling Psychology as a science and practice and promotes ABPP Certification in the Specialty of Counseling Psychology.  It recognizes outstanding contributions to the Specialty of Counseling Psychology.  It also advances the interests of Counseling Psychology in all work settings, legislative and judicial bodies, regulatory bodies, and professional and business entities.  All Board Certified Counseling Psychologists are automatically eligible to become a Fellow of the Academy upon submission of an application.

The American Board of Counseling Psychology

The American Board of Counseling Psychology (ABCoP) is a member board of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). ABPP oversees and authorizes the credentialing activities of fourteen specialty boards. ABCoP, in association with the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), establishes criteria for education, training, experience, and competency requirements.  ABCoP conducts examinations in the specialty of Counseling Psychology and makes recommendations to ABPP for Board Certification.  A Board of Directors, made up of members nationally representative of the specialty and certified in Counseling Psychology, governs the ABCoP.

We wish all of you an enjoyable and rewarding career in psychology, but especially in Counseling Psychology, our deeply committed passion.
