Welcome Message

Welcome to the American Academy of Counseling Psychology webpage. The purpose of the Academy is to:

  1. Advance Counseling Psychology as a science and practice
  2. Participate in nomination and/or election of members of the American Board of Counseling Psychology (ABCoP);
  3. Confer awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the specialty of Counseling Psychology;
  4. Disseminate information in support of the interests of the Academy
  5. Advance the interests of Counseling Psychology within all work settings, legislative and judicial bodies, regulatory bodies, and professional and business entities;
  6. Promote American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) Certification in the Specialty of Counseling Psychology;
  7. Engage in such other activities that are deemed appropriate by the Academy.

The American Academy of Counseling Psychology was founded in 1993 and held its first meeting and elected officers until 1994 in Los Angeles. The first president was Dr. Chuck Guyer,  Dr. Joseph Talley was the first President-elect of the Academy and Dr. Chris Ovide was the first Secretary /Treasurer. As part of its annual activities the Academy confers two awards, the W. James Cossé Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Professional Practice of Counseling Psychology, and the The Distinguished Service Award, both are typically presented at the meeting of the American Psychological Association.

We currently have about about 200 members of the Academy and we communicate via our list serve, AACoP-L@lists.ufl.edu.
